Common questions

Finding Affordable Dental Care in Puerto Rico

Which clinic should I call first?

Not automatically the nearest. Waits differ substantially between sites, and dental hours are often shorter than the health center hours posted on the door. Calling two or three and comparing their next dental appointment is usually faster than traveling to the closest.

Do these clinics accept Medicaid?

Commonly, but participation runs plan by plan rather than program-wide. In most states the dental benefit is administered through separate managed care plans, so a clinic can be in network for one and out for another. Call with the dental plan name on your card. Adult dental coverage under Puerto Rico Medicaid is set by the state and has changed more than once in most states; children’s coverage is required everywhere.

Can they do root canals and dentures, or would I be referred?

This is worth settling before treatment starts. Health centers commonly do extractions in-house and refer root canals to a private endodontist at full price, which changes the arithmetic completely. Dentures are often done on site, with laboratory costs billed on top of the discounted fee.

How long is the wait for a dental appointment?

Longer than for a medical appointment at the same clinic, frequently by weeks, because dental chairs and dentists are the scarcer resource. Ask for the next available and separately whether they hold same-day slots for pain, which is a different queue.
